Benefits:

  • Protects against deer, birds, insects, hail, freezing rain, strong winds, snow

  • Eliminates need for pesticides or repellents

  • Allows most rain in and retains soil moisture but releases excess humidity

  • Gives up to 5 degrees of frost protection, can protect plants up to 8 months

  • Reduces overheating compared to no tunnel or polythene tunnel

  • Allows 75% sunlight transmission; plants only use 1-2%

Potential Arrangements:

  • Can be left closed; rain and sun will come in

  • Can be opened to check, harvest, or water

  • Can be stretched over different types of beds

  • Can be expanded to increase height or length

  • In early spring / late fall (March, Oct), blanket can be added at night for extra protection

  • Can be used with polythene, mesh netting or any cover instead of garden cloth

  • Can be used with twine or string to train peas or other plants upward

Assembly:

  1. Connect two rods with steel connector.

  2. Insert fiberglass rod end into ground at least 4” (10 cm).

  3. Arch other end. Holding securely to prevent snapping straight, connect two more rods for a total of four.

  4. Bend hoop and insert free end into ground at least 4” (10 cm). BE SURE BOTH ENDS ARE DEEP ENOUGH TO PREVENT POPPING OUT AND CAUSING HARM TO YOU OR OTHERS.

  5. Repeat for three other hoops, spacing evenly.

  6. Drape cloth over hoops. Long edge is for long dimension of bed. Short edge is to curve over hoops. Position so overhang is symmetrical.

  7. Use 3 clips to fasten cloth to each other hoop.

  8. Fold excess cloth under or roll up neatly.

  9. Gather end overhangs and push two nails through each end into soil at least 8” (20 cm).

  10. Optional for extra wind resistance: place stones or bricks on cloth along edges.
